Blooms and Balance: My Earth Day Reflections
Share
Earth Day has a funny way of sneaking up on me. One minute I'm making breakfast and reminding my kids for the fifth time to put on actual shoes, and the next thing I know-bam!-it's April 22nd and the whole world is talking about the planet. But truthfully? Around here in Encinitas, we're thinking about the earth every day.
For me, the real celebration doesn't come from a calendar reminder. It happens in the backyard. That's my happy place-the garden, where things grow a little wild, the air smells like eucaluptus, and I can finally hear myself thing (you know, in between kid shouts of "minecraft chicken jockey!!!!!"). It's the kind of peaceful space that inspires so many of our flower arrangements at Twigs.
Tending to my plants gives me a kind of peace I don't get anywhere else. There's something magical about watering the herbs, checking on the tomatoes, or gently telling Leroy the dog to stop running in the succulents. And honestly, that's where so many ideas from Twigs come from. Some of our best flower arrangements are inspired by what's growing right out there in the yard-messy, colorful, and perfectly imperfect.
As a local florist in Encinitas, I'm often surrounded by blooms for everything from birthday flowers & bouquets to sympathy flowers & bouquets, but it's those garden moments that remind me why I fell in love with flowers in the first place. They help people connect--with nature, with emotions, and with each other.
So this Earth Day, my gentle suggestion? Step outside. Touch a plant. Take a walk. Water that one houseplant you've been ignoring for weeks (no judgement-I've been there). Nature doesn't ask for much, just that we show up.
I'll be in the garden if you need me. Probably with dirt under my nails, thinking up ideas for the next batch of weekly flower arrangements, and a kid running around in mismatched socks.
With love (and muddy hands),
Nancy
